bite—these Strongylium can run a lot faster
than one would expect from the usually
sedate Tenebrionidae. Others mimic
Erotylidae, the pleasing fungus beetles,
which can often be distasteful or even toxic.
Even those stenochiines which are probably
not mimics can strongly resemble and be
confused with other beetle families, such
as Chrysomelidae or Coccinellidae
above | Cuphotes erichsoni This South American
beetle mimics the unpalatable fungus beetle Gibbifer
(Erotylidae) which occurs in the same environment.
right | Strongylium This Singaporean beetle
has two projections on its thorax that resemble
the eyes of a fast-running predatory tiger beetle
(Carabidae: Cicindelinae).
